Ian Page's return to top form paved the way for City's 84-run victory over Maungakaramea in a high-scoring 50-over match, on a batting-friendly Maungakaramea wicket.
Page struck 16 boundaries, including three sixes, on his way to the top score of 141 in round four of the Mark Cromie Holden Premier One Day Competition, helping City achieve their second win in the contest.
After Bert Horner was dismissed by Kurtley Watson for 10 runs, fellow opener Richard Atkins and Page went on to make a 107-run partnership.
When Atkins was out lbw for 53, Page remained at the crease and made an 81 run partnership with Harry Darkins (41), followed by a 65 run partnership with Vishaan Harypursat (13). Kurt Wilson was the other main contributor on 37 not out. The hosts quickly set about chasing down City's 344-run target, with Joseph O'Sullivan knocking 10 boundaries before Wilson had him lbw for 63.
Dean Child also hit some big shots and looked promising until he too was beaten by Wilson and stumped by wicketkeeper Horner for 60 runs.
Although the openers had set Maungakaramea up nicely for the chase, a middle-order collapse helped along by Wilson, who grabbed five wickets for 47 and Darkins 3-17, saw City all out for 260 in 46.5 overs.
At Kaipara Flats, Whangarei Boys High School had the satisfaction of handing the hosts their first defeat this season.
After winning the toss, Kaipara sent the schoolboys in to bat. Skipper Bradley Kneebone opened the batting with Jordan Antunovich (5) and fell just short of a half century, when Michael O'Flaherty trapped him lbw.
Following No 3 batsman Ben Smith's exit from the game due to injury after scoring 10 runs, the middle order collapsed, with only Kashmir Harypursat and Tom Herman reaching double figures. However, tailenders Max Davis and David Armitt did their best to rectify the innings, with Davis hitting 32 not out and Armitt 14 not out.
The schoolboys bowled aggressively and Armitt and Herman quickly dismantled Kaipara's top-order batsmen for meagre totals.
Kyran Dill's 76 runs should have had Kaipara back in the game along with Ryan Garnett (14) and Dexter Buchanan (17). However, the school- boys had Kaipara all out for 167 - with four overs to spare. Herman was the best with the ball for Boys' High, taking 4-14 and Harypursat grabbed 2-18.
While Kaipara Flats suffered their first loss of the season, Kamo finally secured their first win of the present one-day competition with a three-wicket defeat of Onerahi Central.
After an average start, Kamo's middle order fought back to chase down Onerahi's 194, with Jamie Millar scoring the bulk of the runs with 85 not out, well supported by David Pinny with 43.
Round five continues next Saturday.
