The Northland polo season has ended with a two day tournament showcasing some top class riders and ponies.
Northland polo club president Paula Geard has led the charge to re-establish the club after a long absence in the region and last weekend players from outside the area lined up to challenge some of the club's best.
Four teams battled it out for the Sloane Cup, first competed for in 1930, at the club's field in Tangiteroria, near Dargaville.
The field belongs to former top polo player John Taylor who, at the top of his game, was ranked as a five-goal player and was one of the best in the country. Now the Tangiteroria farmer has turned his hay making paddocks into a pristine polo field.
Last weekend Taylor was still in the mix, but this time opting to umpire the games rather than charge through the chukkas.
It was the first time away teams had visited and they were not disappointed.
Two Northland teams proved they could hoof it with the rest, with teams from Taupiri and Auckland playing. The final was between Tangiteroria and Taupiri, with the visitors being the favoured side to take the trophy.
But the steely Tangi team of Glen Taylor, Johnny Martin, Graeme Martin and Angus Kelly came out on top winning by 6 goals.
