Whangarei Old Girls enjoyed mixed fortunes in a Northland premier women's hockey league double header at the weekend.
First up on Saturday was Maungakaramea who were too dominant at ITM Stadium, despite a solid start from Old Girls.
It was 2-1 at halftime, and Old Girls equalised shortly after the second spell began and applied pressure.
However, Maungakaramea found their second wind and powered home to win 5-2.
Yesterday, in round four of the competition, Old Girls put in an encouraging performance against Hikurangi, despite missing frontline player Felicity Heinen, along with goalie Rachael Lecky and Jade McLeod, who were away with the Northland under-21 squad.
One up at halftime, Old Girls found momentum, winning 4-0. The goals came from Samaria Tugaga, Ariana Tugaga, Ashleigh Malcolm and Aimee Hayes.
Meanwhile, Old Girls thrashed Kamo High School on Saturday, winning 6-1.
There was no chance for Kamo to recover, however, backing up to play Maungakaramea yesterday.
Kamo came out determinedly, but Maungakaramea were too good and topped off a good weekend with a 2-0 win.
In the Northland premier men's league, Maungakaramea continued their winning streak this season, having not lost a game to date.
They racked up seven goals against Mangapai to win 7-1, after leading 4-0 at halftime.
Springfield took out their game against Bream Bay, who put up a good fight but went down 4-2.
