FIVE individual goals in a hockey game usually sparks off an evening of revelry, but Mangapai's Mark Thorne wasn't much in the mood to celebrate his feat on Saturday night after dislocating his shoulder late in the match against Bream Bay.
Mangapai completed an emphatic 6-1 win over the young Bream Bay side in their Northland Premier Division clash, with Thorne and Cameron Hellier the only Mangapai players on the scoresheet.
Thorne was in awesome form during the match scoring some spectacular goals from the field, but it was the shoulder injury that dominated his day.
Mangapai coach and Mark's father Barry, said the injury was a concern to the team and the family alike.
"Hopefully it's not going to affect his season too much, it's not the first time he's done it and although he carried with it (playing), he's pretty sore today."
Mark first injured the shoulder in Australia two years ago and he has suffered the same injury two or three times since then.
The game was a lot closer in the first half, and Mangapai led just 2-1 at the break, before taking control of the match.
Thorne's striking partner Dean Gibson, back after a couple of seasons in reserve grade, showed he is a bright prospect for the side.
While promising, he is still slightly off the pace in the higher grade and let his frustrations show in the second half of the match, by receiving a yellow card.
"He's matured quite a bit since he last played for us, but he's still got to learn to control that edge to his game, but he's showing signs of joining Mark in a potentially lethal striking duo for us," Barry Thorne said.
Springfield and Maungakaramea battled to a 1-1 draw in their match on Saturday, with Nick Breslin opening the scoring for Maungakaramea before Gavin Alison equalised in the first half.
Although Springfield enjoyed more possession and territory in the second half they couldn't break down the resolute Maungakaramea defence and the two teams shared the points.
Ashlee Martin's goal gave Whangarei Girls' High School the halftime lead in their match against Hikurangi in the women's premier division, but when Dene Cheeseman equalised with an attractive goal the game was very much in the balance.
There were chances at both ends during an exciting second spell, but it was Natasha Cotton who finally scored the match's defining goal to give girls' high their second win of the competition.
Old Girls rebounded from their disastrous first round performance to beat defending champions Maungakaramea 4-2.
The champions were also suffering from a lack of match practice after sitting out last weekend with the bye and it showed with a number of defensive errors that put Old Girls on the front foot.
Old Girls took the lead with a Jane Squire goal, but it was cancelled out before the break by an Anna Thorpe equaliser.
Sheryl Thorne put Maungakaramea ahead in the second spell, but when Laura Douglas levelled the score from a penalty corner, the pressure went back on the champions.
In the final 10 minutes Old Girls were on top and two more goals to Douglas and Jess McAllister completed the victory.
