Maungakaramea bounced back from its opening loss last week in the best way possible with a 6-1 hammering of Hikurangi on Saturday.
The effort was spearheaded by five goals from striker Anna Thorpe, who captain Tania Crene said had a point to prove.
"She spent some time on the bench last week and I think that motivated her on Saturday, she was in spectacular form and the goals were from all over the place," she said.
Crene said the win was a huge improvement on their first-up effort in the competition the previous week - a defeat by Old Girls.
"We played 100 times better than last week regardless of the score ... we had a tendency to dribble too much with the ball last week and we tried to focus on trapping and passing quickly this week," she said.
Hikurangi had a few gaps in their team that may have contributed to an inflated scoreline Crene said but she wasn't taking anything away from her team's first win of the season.
In the other premier women's match, Whangarei Girls High School defeated Kamo 2-0, their second victory over the Kamo side in the week, after they won a catch-up match 3-0.
Whangarei Girls dominated possession and territory in the match but failed to capitalise on it, with Kamo's defence generally winning the battle.
Girls High scored one goal in either half, with Ashleigh Malcolm and Natasha Cotton the scorers.
Mangapai continue to make the early running in the men's premier competition with a 4-2 win over Maungakaramea on Saturday.
The game started well for Maungakaramea with a goal to Sam Webb from a penalty corner but quickly turned, with Mangapai scoring three quick goals to Dean Gibson, Barry Thorne and Ray Correa from the field to lead 3-1 at halftime.
Maungakaramea continued to enjoy good possession in the second spell but the Mangapai were too quick on the counter-attack and their defence was the difference on the day with both sides adding a further goal to their tallies.
Currie Electrical Springfield had their first win of the season win a comfortable win 4-0 over Bream Bay United.
Springfield started the game in a hurry, scoring three goals in the first quarter before the the young Bream Bay side adjusted to the pace of the game.
The match didn't rise to any great heights after that but at least it allowed the Bream Bay players more valuable experience playing in the premiers.
Richard Storey, Simon Davies, Dion Watts and Gavin Alison were the scorers in the match.
