Having come through with wins in the quarter and semi finals, she said her team entered the final with experienced players who stepped up their game.
Bream Bay's win ended Maungakaramea's six-year reign as men's hockey champs.
In the women's premier final, Springfield edged out Old Girls 2-1 to also register their first ever title.
A goal apiece in either half to Samaria Tugaga and Kendyll Peters sealed the 2-1 win for a relatively new club.
They were up 1-0 at half time.
Coach Angeline Waetford said that, as expected, it was a tight match as both teams have been separated by one or two goals whenever they played.
Tugaga drew first blood in the 15th minute from a penalty corner before Peters sealed the match with 10 minutes to go.
Old Girls then scored from a penalty corner with only five minutes to go.
Springfield took its goalie Karen Parker off and put another player on at the tail-end of the match.
"Our club had a women's team before but this was the first time for us to win the final," Waetford said.
She said the club had had a core group of players who have been playing consistently each week throughout the season as well as a good structure in place for the past three years.
Waetford has also been involved with the game at the national level and said she introduced some new things at Springfield that helped in their performance this year.
