They eventually did put one away midway through the first half to go into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
Martin praised the way his team played and how they were able to mark key players in the opposition out of the game.
"Our guys stepped right up and it was a big effort," Martin said.
Lachlan McLeod doubled Springfield's lead in the second half by converting a penalty stroke.
In other reserve men's hockey matches on Thursday, Maungakaramea beat Whangarei Boys High School 3-1 and Hora Hora beat Bream Bay 10-3.
In the reserve A women's grade, Maungakaramea beat Whangarei Girls' High School 5-1 while Parihaka beat Mangapai 9-0 on Friday.
Hikurangi beat Kamo High School 7-0 and Old Girls beat Springfield 5-0.
