Springfield qualified for the Northland premier men's hockey final by fighting off a Maungakaramea comeback to eventually win 3-2 on Tuesday evening.
Springfield have been the standout team of the men's competition during round-robin play this season and player-coach Lloyd Gurr said this week's match had gone according to plan - at least for the most part.
"We had the match comfortably under control and then sat back and tried to defend our lead instead of playing hockey, and you can't do that when a player like Sam Webb is in the other team," Gurr said.
Webb, the Maungakaramea and Northland drag-flick expert, scored two goals from penalty corners in the final 10 minutes to bring his side back to within an inch of forcing extra time in an exciting end to the playoff between the first and second teams.
Thomas Keogh opened the scoring with a penalty stroke and Damien Clark increased Springfield's lead to 2-0 before the break.
