Springfield qualified for the Northland premier men's hockey final by fighting off a Maungakaramea comeback to eventually win 3-2 on Tuesday evening.
Springfield have been the standout team of the men's competition during round-robin play this season and player-coach Lloyd Gurr said this week's match had gone according to plan- at least for the most part.
"We had the match comfortably under control and then sat back and tried to defend our lead instead of playing hockey, and you can't do that when a player like Sam Webb is in the other team," Gurr said.
Webb, the Maungakaramea and Northland drag-flick expert, scored two goals from penalty corners in the final 10 minutes to bring his side back to within an inch of forcing extra time in an exciting end to the playoff between the first and second teams.
Thomas Keogh opened the scoring with a penalty stroke and Damien Clark increased Springfield's lead to 2-0 before the break.
"In the end, we didn't really deserve to, though; we started poorly and that's something we'll have to address before we play Bream Bay this weekend."
Maungakaramea now take on the winners of the third and fourth playoff, Bream Bay, on Saturday, with the winners going on to play Springfield in the final.
"At least we've got another shot at reaching the final. Hopefully, we can take a few positives from this game and build on it and hopefully we'll get another crack at them in the final," Webb said.
On Monday night the women's premier semifinalists were confirmed when Springfield beat Kamo High School 6-0 and Old Girls squeaked past Whangarei Girls High School 1-0.
The results mean that top qualifiers Springfield take on Hikurangi, while Old Girls play Maungakaramea in the other match.
