The gulf between the top and the bottom teams in the women's premier hockey competition continues to grow, while in the men's competition it appears to be narrowing.
Women's league leaders Maungakaramea were close to despondent after leaving the turf only 3-0 ahead of Kamo High school at halftime on Saturday.
They felt they had played poorly and had let Kamo off the hook after dominating early on. Maungakaramea went on to score four goals in the second spell, improving their execution to finish the match 7-1 ahead.
Captain Tania Crene paid tribute to Kamo.
"They fought hard all the way through the game and, despite being a little light on depth and strength, they kept us honest right until the end," she said.
Striker Anna Thorpe continued on her scoring blitz, since trialling with the Black Sticks at the beginning of the season, notching up another hat-trick, while Alicia Jurasich (2), Monica Hudson and Rhonda Rowsell were the other scorers.
Old Girls came off their bye last week rejuvenated on Saturday to run away with the game against Hikurangi, eventually winning 6-0.
Jess McAllister scored in the opening minute and Old Girls' speedy, short passing game continued to give their opponents plenty of problems. The return of Melanie Ackers to the team helped Old Girls pile the pressure on, with McAllister adding another, while Zoe Mutton, Tarranah Vette, Laura Douglas and Nicki Hayes, were the other scorers.
Despite being a couple of players down against men's league leaders Maungakaramea on Saturday, Springfield reminded other teams they are still a threat in the competition with a good allround performance.
All the goals in Maungakaramea's 3-1 win came from penalty corners, with Sam Webb claiming the first for a 1-0 lead at halftime. Dion Watts levelled shortly after the break and the game was finely balanced until veteran Graeme Bint scored from a deflection with about 15 minutes to go.
David Heappey added the final goal which was a blow to Springfield's defence that had toiled well, inspired by some good shot-stopping by keeper Sam Davidson.
In the other premier game, second-placed Mangapai beat Bream Bay 5-3.
Bream Bay have been struggling for the majority of the season but competed well on Saturday.
They might have been ahead at the break but were instead 0-2 down.
Unlike previous weeks, however, Bream Bay rallied to make life difficult for Mangapai in the second spell and outscored their opponents with goals to Michael Scott (2) and Mark Billington.
Mangapai's goals came from a Mark Thorne hat-trick, with Dean Gibson scoring a double.
