A lack of poise in front of goal cost Whangarei Girls' High School the chance of winning hockey's Federation Cup for the third successive year.
They just couldn't score enough goals during the tournament when they had the chance and in the end it cost them the opportunity of making the finals.
Although they qualified for the quarterfinals, they were unconvincing and went down 1-0 to St Margarets, who eventually made the final before being beaten by 2008 champions St Cuthberts.
WGHS might consider themselves unlucky not to have progressed further, but they eventually finished sixth after a good 4-2 win over Rangitoto College and a disappointing 0-2 loss to Tauranga Girls.
Kamo High School on the other hand were definitely short of luck at the tournament, eventually ending up in the bottom four and being relegated to the second-tier Marie Fry Trophy for next year.
The Kamo team just missed out on the quarterfinals after a win and a loss, including a frustrating 1-1 draw with Whangarei Girls' High in their final pool match.
They then went down 0-1 in a disappointing crossover match against Westlake Girls' High School before winning their final games.
Meanwhile there was some good news for Northland hockey with Kerikeri High School winning the Jenny McDonald Satellite Tournament in Hamilton.
The side was all tied up at 2-all with Auckland's Barradine College at fulltime, but Nita Sullivan broke the deadlock in the first period of extra time with the winner.
The school's boys' team finished 14th in the Woolastin Satellite Tournament in Whakatane.
Meanwhile, Boys' High finished fifth at the second-tier India Shield in Dunedin.
BHS lost to Rosehill in their quarterfinal 0-1 in a tight game in stark contrast to some of their other high-scoring matches, which saw them score a 7-6 win over St Paul's Collegiate and a 5-0 win over Wanganui High School in the match for fifth and sixth.
