Maungakaramea remain on track for automatic qualification in the men's premier league hockey final this season with a 7-0 win over Bream Bay on Saturday.
The result maintains their six-point lead over Mangapai in the competition but their win was not as impressive as the scoreline suggests.
Bream Bay started the match well and might have claimed two or three goals before Maungakaramea settled into the match.
Maungakaramea struck back to take the lead through Sam Webb and it seemed they would maintain that lead at the break until Bream Bay unaccountably fell apart just before the break, conceding three rapid goals.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Bream Bay team winning plenty of possession off Maungakaramea. Andrew McLennan, Brad Cotton and Chad Cahalane played well enough to help the team fashion a number of chances but without anyone in the side able to find the finishing touch.
Maungakaramea then added another three goals in the final six minutes to complete Bream Bay's misery. The story is a familiar one for Bream Bay coach Graeme Cotton, who said similar performances were making the season "hard yakka" for the team.
"If you don't take your chances at the other end then you're setting yourself up for a fall and that's what happened on Saturday," he said.
"This kind of thing has dogged us all the way through this season. We play some good stuff but then we have some lapses and it all goes downhill from there."
Mangapai beat Springfield 3-1 to maintain their chances of heading off Maungakaramea, with all three goals scored by striker Mark Thorne. Mangapai dominated the first spell but led only 1-0 at the break.
A dragflick from a penalty corner doubled their lead in the second spell but a goal to Springfield saw them surge back into contention. The game was balanced on a knife edge with Springfield making most of the running until Thorne completed his hat-trick.
In the women's league Maungakaramea also hold a six-point lead over the rest of the field after demolishing Hikurangi 7-0.
Hikurangi started strongly and troubled the league leaders early on, but they were unable to counteract Maungakaramea's passing game, which effectively cut Hikurangi out.
Anna Thorpe's golden scoring touch continued with four goals, with Alicia Jurisich, Arriene Christie and Monica Hudson completing the scoring.
In the other match of the women's round, Kamo High School put up a good display against Whangarei Girls' High School.
After conceding a goal by Natasha Cotton in the first minute of the match, things looked bleak for Kamo, but they defended stoutly and had some moments of their own to still be in the match with 10 minutes to go.
A late reverse stick goal by Jade McLeod settled the win for Girls' High but it was one of Kamo's best performances of the season and a sign that their rebuilding programme is beginning to pay off.
Kamo keeper Brooke Morrison was at her best in goal, while Brooke Neal and debutante Ariana Tugaga were in good touch for high school.
