Onerahi Central made a handy start in the top-of-the-table two-day match against Kaipara Flats.
Table leaders Onerahi batted first on Sunday at Kaipara and they set a target of 166 all out in their 55 overs, with classy batting from Craig Harrison, who top-scored with 62, including nine fours.
Kaipara's bowlers shared the work around, with Dexter Buchanan (2/17), Aaron Sattler (2/18) and Gordon Penney (2/35) showing good form.
The hosts team's openers struggled with the bat, though, with their Northland contingent of Brad Wilson, Tauseef Satti and Jake Phillips absent playing Counties Manukau in Weymouth.
At first drop, wicketkeeper Michael O'Flaherty had a solid stint at the crease, claiming the top score (34) for his side, while Kevin Forde and Mark Dellow were the other main contributors, hitting 18 and 16 respectively.
A creditable effort by Onerahi with the ball restricted Kaipara to 96 at stumps with seven wickets down. In a strong bowling attack, Nic Breslin snatched 3/27 during his 13 overs, and Jamie Matthews took 2/20 in his 10 overs.
Kaipara's lower-order batsmen will need to step up this weekend when they resume batting on the second day of this vital last round. The side will be bolstered by the return of their Northland players, while Onerahi regain skipper Andy McDowell, who also lined up for the regional team.
Meanwhile at Kensington Park, City started their two-day clash with Whangarei Boys' High School in style, led by club stalwart Joey Yovich, playing on the back of his 100th match for Northern Districts on Saturday.
City were sent into bat by the schoolboys, and Yovich made 80 at No5, before Alex Seymour bowled him. Kurt Wilson was also on form, chipping in 46 towards City's first innings total of 217 all out.
Boys' High's Tom Herman was the best with the ball, claiming four wickets for 27 runs in nine overs, while Seymour snatched three for 64.
The schoolboys' run chase was a lacklustre affair, and they pulled up short with a score of just 79 in 42 overs. Vishaan Harypursat (17), Tom Herman (18) and Seymour (11 not out) were the only batsman to reach double figures, with the City bowlers on the rampage. Club professional Owain Hopkins took an impressive 5/12, while Jamie Kay had three for 17.
The bottom two teams in the competition, Kamo and Maungakaramea, battled it out at Kamo, with the hosts making 207 in their first innings.
Maungakaramea professional Finley Brooker reeled Kamo in, however, smashing 11 fours on his way to 103 not out, his side 197/5 at stumps.
Brooker and David Croucher (50 not out) will resume next week and seek to extend their partnership of 134, while Kamo's bowlers will need to dig deep to stop Maungakaramea's momentum.
