Hatea Harriers' first race of the season covered the challenging Whangarei Boys' High School cycle track 2km circuit, with seniors running up to 8km.
Lakiesha Cummings was the first Harriett (girl) home, completing 2km in 11:55, with five-year-old Pharrell Bradshaw running with his grand-parents John Kent and Judith Bradshaw, completing the 2km in 15:29.
Harry Linford (U17), Jason Trass and Jonny Creelman tussled for the lead in the first lap of the men's 8km, but Creelman took over on the second lap, finishing in 31:39, clear of Trass in 34:14. Linford completed 4km in 16:40.
Anson Clapcott and Keith King ran neck and neck for 4km of the masters' 6km race, with Clapcott nosing ahead on the last lap to win in 28:04, just ahead of King in 28:09. Warrick Millar followed in 34:11, Tania Davis in 41:58 and Dennis Walker in 43:35.
In the masters' 8km, Steve Trass, Colin Smith and Neville Bassett ran together for the first lap but Trass's fitness soon showed as he cleared out to win in 38:52, ahead of Smith in 41:02 and Bassett in 44:14.
