The Whangarei Racing Club had a reasonable turnout of supporters at 91.6 More FM Raceday.
Yesterday's eight-race programme made for some interesting betting with the 2100 metre More FM Challenge race the feature of the day.
Last raceday at Ruakaka saw two local horses charging down to the line with almost nothing between them. Govind and Uncle Shayne, both locally trained and owned were heading towards another duel over the 2100m distance.
Both Kenny Rae and Alan Johnson were running their respective charges in the same race but all the interest seemed to be headed towards the Ricky Wells-trained Govind and the Dean and Donna Logan-trained Uncle Shayne.
Unfortunately, Govind started badly from the gates and things went fairly amiss from there.
He certainly did not show his abilities of the past while Uncle Shayne, who had not seen this distance before, ran four wide for most of the race and also looked as if he would be out of the money.
A huge run at the last by Uncle Shayne brought some excitement back to the race but nobody counted on the Ralph Manning trained Peace Lilly who stormed up to challenge and was the eventual winner.
Govind has since been vet-checked clear and may take some spelling time out now.
