Crowds filled the stands, making the most of the fine weather as Ruakaka Raceway came to life yesterday.
The punters were looking forward to some big races, including the second leg of the Stoney Bridge Triple Crown points series and the Bob Tait Memorial Cup.
The 1200m second leg was won by Masquerade, trained by Steve McKee from Auckland and owned by the 100-strong Winners Circle Syndicate from Auckland.
Board member of the Auckland Racing Club, part-owner Brent Cooper was over the moon with the win. "This is a day to remember for everyone," he said.
All eyes will be on the third leg on July 11, with trainers and owners keen to take home the $50,000 prize.
This year was the second year for the Bob Tait Memorial Cup - a chance for the club and the Tait family to recognise the contribution the late Bob Tait made to racing in the North.
The 1600m, $8000 race was won by Minqar Qaim, trained by Mark Walker from Matamata.
The late Mr Tait's son, Blyth, an equestrian legend in his own right, was there at the race enjoying the atmosphere.
Whangarei racing president Dean Logan also thought the day was a hit. "It's a beautiful day and a good crowd. The local horses are going well. "We're getting a lot of support this year from owners and trainers. I guess that's what we wanted to do when we set the series up four years ago."
People in the crowd seemed to be making the most of the weather, such as Ron Lawrence, who came up from Auckland to take part and have a punt.
"It's a good atmosphere. The weather is good. I've been ahead today, so that's good. The hospitality here is very good."
Janet Nops from Waipu was having some luck out there as well. "It's awesome ... I got a trifecta so that made my day. It's always well organised and it's good for the area."
Ed Brogden from Ruawai was not having as good a day as the others, but still was enjoying himself. "Well, you win some, you lose some," he said. I've been going to the races since I was 12 years old. I enjoy the races, especially on a day like this."
Good weather makes for a great day at the races
