A victory by Northland No.1 Caroline Bon over Auckland's Dasom Lee was a highlight of the weekend's quadrangular golf tournament at North Harbour.
The 3&1 win over the current New Zealand No.2, who was third in her international debut at the Queen Sirikit Cup in March, was a big moment for the 20-year-old Whangarei golfer.
"The win was a real feather in her cap," co-selector Kerry Pevy said.
"Dasom's a really tough competitor and to beat her certainly wasn't easy."
Bon also beat North Harbour No.1 Yeon Son Kim in the morning round at the Omaha Golf Course 3&2 and the win over Lee in the afternoon capped off a memorable day.
Yeon Son, or Jamie as she is better known, is also in the New Zealand amateur team, while Bon is currently a national development player - but one whose star seems to be on the rise.
Bon put her good results on Saturday down to her putting.
"It was the putting that was working a treat. Against Dasom I made three birdies in the first six holes and I just kept on dropping all my putts all day and it was the same against Jamie, pretty much," Bon said.
There was disappointment to follow for the young golfer, however, when she was beaten by Waikato No.1 Emily Perry the following day at the Warkworth Golf Course. Bon said after great conditions at Omaha the previous day, she was unable to adapt to the sodden Warkworth course on Sunday.
"There was just too much mud at Warkworth and all my chips were too short all day - she ended up beating me 3&2, which was pretty disappointing."
The rest of the results in the quadrangular tournament were less encouraging for Northland, who finished last in the competition with 12 points. Auckland won with 36 points, followed by North Harbour (29), Waikato (19) and Northland.
But Pevy was not too concerned with the result, with regular No.2 Samantha Dangen unavailable and her replacement Sunny Nam Koong playing despite a bout of the flu.
"The mere fact she was still playing was amazing - she was dragging herself around by Sunday," Pevy said.
"For the others, handicap-wise we did quite well but you're fighting a hard battle against these teams - I mean Auckland's No.8 was playing off scratch, whereas our No.8 was playing off a seven-handicap," she said.
Nevertheless, there were some good results with wins to Sjanna Bonnington, Phoebe Perrin and three halved matches to Pevy, and a half for Alana Sherman.
Waitangi's Marama Baker scored three wins against the other three reserves.
