Fishing
The dates for the annual Fishin' Chicks women's game and sports fishing competition at Houhora have been announced, with the event officially set to begin at 4pm on February 7, and run until the final weigh-in at 5pm on February 9.
Organisers noted that equated to 48 hours of fishing and two stay-away nights, saying: "Tell the boss you're taking Friday off and going fishing with the girls."
There will be prizes for the heaviest billfish, gamefish, and tag and release billfish and shark, as well as for kingfish, snapper, kahawai, trevally and land-based snapper. There are also three $100 cash prizes up for grabs to the first three anglers tagging and releasing or landing their first billfish.
The prize-giving is at 7.30pm on February 9. Organisers say the theme for this year's notorious fancy dress after-party is Wild West, with the best-dressed winning a $100 bar tab. The best story or poem about a skipper wins a bottle of top-shelf rum.
