Whangarei Girls' High School were threatened by a determined and improving Fideliter Development side during round four of Whangarei Netball's premier grade competition at Kensington Stadium.
Friday night's game went down to the wire and, despite a huge effort from the under-21 Fideliter side, which is currently bottom of the standings, WGHS won 44-42.
The victory was a relief for WGHS coach Hayley Taylor, who said the team's plan this season was to make the top four after claiming last year's wooden spoon.
The girls stayed third equal on the table with Friday's win alongside Whangarei Old Boys.
"We set a goal at the start of the season to make the top six and that has changed now to make the top four," Taylor said.
"We are developing as a unit and have our eye on being in there."
With centre Sian Telfer away at a tournament with the New Zealand Academy Basketball side and a few players sick, Taylor brought up several players from the high school's second team, including goal shoot Allanah Vinson.
"Allanah was the find of the night - she came on at goal shoot for us in the second half and helped us through a very tight last quarter.
"Her height of around six foot [1.82m] allowed our mid-court players to feed her the ball and and her shooting was very accurate."
Vinson was called into the team for the upcoming Upper North Island Secondary Schools tournament at Hamilton, replacing mid-court player Tara Wells who left school last term, Taylor said.
While it was not her side's best performance - throwing away ball and lacking drive through the mid-court - Taylor was pleased with the win, and credited Fideliter Development with a hugely improved game since the start of the season.
Fideliter Development coach Carol McClintock said she was happy with her team's progress this season.
"They are progressing weekly which is what we are aiming for as they are a feeder team for the No1 side," she said.
Development player Kelsey Power moved up to Fideliter's top side to fill Judy MacDonald's shooting spot, when she was unable to finish playing the rest of season, McClintock said.
Fideliter 1 also played at Kensington Stadium on Friday night against table leaders Marist Combined, but the Marist girls were too strong for the Fideliter side easily winning, 44-29.
Meanwhile at Kamo High School, Marist 1, who share the lead with Marist Combined, also had a convincing victory over Takahiwai, winning 63-40.
Play stopped between Whangarei Old Boys and Manawanui for 40 minutes when Manawanui's Rongomau Clark hit the high school wall and fell, tearing her knee cartilage. Clark was unable to move and the game was delayed until first aid arrived. Old Boys won the game 55-41.
The two Marist sides lead the table, both on 14 points, with Old Boys and WGHS on 12, third equal. They are chased by Fideliter 1 on five points, Takahiwai and Fideliter Development on three and Manawanui on two points.
