Fans can expect a fiery stand-off between two in-form teams when Portland Panthers clash with Hikurangi Stags on Saturday.
Both sides have had two wins from two rounds in the Whangarei City and Districts' Rugby League Competition and are keen to continue their winning ways in this weekend's round three clash at Otaika Sports Park.
Portland and Hikurangi along with Hokianga are early leaders on the table, stamping their authority on the 2011 season.
Portland showed their tenacious spirit when they clawed their way back to win over Takahiwai in round one, followed with a 44-28 victory against Wairoa, while the Stags trampled Marist 84-16 last weekend, on the back of their win over Wairoa in the opening round.
Also sitting on four points is the Andrew Karoi-coached Hokianga Pioneers, who started the 2011 season with an upset win over last years' premiers Kaikohe Lions, followed by a comfortable win over Otaua. After a round one loss and the bye at the weekend, Bay Slayers will be looking for an improved performance to end the Pioneers' early good run at Okaihau Domain.
Wairoa put up a good battle against Portland at the weekend and will clash with City on Saturday at City, determined to nab their first win of the year, though City's big forwards will be hard to beat.
All games kick off at 2.30pm.
Whangarei City and Districts Rugby League Competition Points: Hikurangi, Portland, Hokianga 4, Moerewa, Takahiwai, Otaua, Bay Slayers, City, Kaikohe 2, Marist, Wairoa 0.
