After an ideal start, racing at the 2011 Bay of Islands Sailing Week Regatta slowed to a sedate pace as the wind died on day two.
Bay of Islands Sailing Week media liaison Lesley Haslar said day one of racing went successfully in the 10-15 knot winds, gusting to 20 on Wednesday.
"We had a great start to the Bay Regatta, especially after Tuesday night's rain and stormy winds. One hundred and thirty three boats started in twelve divisions, including the 22 contesting the Flying 15 National Championships, which are part of the regatta.
"There was some very close racing and tight finishes in the Flying 15s."
The biggest multihull in the regatta, Team Vodafone, was miles ahead in every race Wednesday, while Triple 8 had a tough day missing some marks. Wired (Division A) got the gun in three races, with Orbit in the B Division, finishing first in race one as a wake-up call for the A boats.
Playbuoy (B Division) had a Port and Starboard confrontation with multihull This Way Up, the latter boat, unfortunately, out of the regatta. This incident went to protest and the result will be advised later.
Meanwhile, on day two of racing , the wind logged in as "variable" , and the lack resulted in some delays, Haslar said.
Racing finally got under way in most divisions and two Whangarei boats racing did well.
Myst placing first in E Division, and Zoot Allures coming home with a fourth place in the Elliott 5.9 Division.
