Whangarei 17-year-old Ethan Johnstone had a successful return to the track following a recent injury.
Competing in Saturday's Athletics Auckland Hot Meet at Mount Smart he finished second in the M20 200m in 24.61s and third in the 100m (12.17s), running into a strong headwind.
Fellow Athletics Whangarei club member Hazel Tana, 14, turned in the top track performances at the Athletics Northland Children's Championships.
Tana set another personal best time while winning the 800m in 2m 24.18s and followed this with a win in the 400m. The Northland Secondary Schools Championships will be held on Wednesday at Northland Athletics and Gymnastics Stadium.
Whangarei Boys High School's Johnstone and Tana, who attends Whangarei Girls High School will be in action alongside Northland's top school-aged athletes.
