BAY of Islands teenager Jessie Chappell knew that the show hunter event at this year's Horse of the Year Show was her final chance to accomplish the ultimate goal.
She rode two superb rounds at the recent equestrian show in Hastings to be awarded the honour of Category B Show Hunter Pony of the Year.
Chappell and her pony, My Smart Remark, were top qualifiers after the first phase and pulled off a flawless second round to win the coveted title from 30 other hopefuls. The same combination placed second in the class last year and was determined to improve its standings in their final season together.
The 17-year-old is concluding her riding career on ponies due to age restrictions and could not have completed it in better style, also winning the rider equitation class.
Northland Show Hunter had nine riders representing their sport at the prestigious event, with promising young riders such as Dana Thomas and Amber Jobbitt competing well against the strong opposition.
Unlike showjumping, show hunter is judged on the horse's style and obedience over the course of fences and is a popular sport for riders.
