Entrants shatter record

A record was set in Sport Northland's Dargaville-based Run/Walk Series event this month.

The Baylys 2 Dargaville Run/Walk took place on June 14, with the entrants almost doubling the former record number who turned up in 2010.

Sport Northland events team leader Azelia Parkinson said the day had been a success.

"Kaipara district participants had the biggest increase in the event. In 2014 there were 140 people and this year there were 250," she said.

Parkinson said the participants "smashed the record out of the park".

The biggest group consisted of 77 people from Silver Fern Farms, and there were many Dargaville Primary pupils too.

The event had two courses people could choose to run or walk. The 12km course started at Cynthia Place, Baylys Beach, and the 6.8km course started at Rick's Paint Shop on Baylys Coast Rd, both finishing at Memorial Park in Dargaville.

The winners for the long-distance 12km course were Whangarei residents Louis Young, who completed it in 45 minutes, and Ady Mackenzie, who took just over 52 minutes.

Parkinson said it had been a tremendous day for those who walked or ran and the volunteers.
