Whangarei's Josh Martinac is in a dilemma.
The time is getting closer to decide whether to concentrate on one of his two chosen sports, basketball or soccer, and he is edging towards basketball after his inclusion in the under-17 New Zealand Koru basketball team.
The 16-year-old Whangarei Boys' High School student spent this winter juggling playing basketball for the Northland Suns and soccer for North Force Reserves.
But the 188cm small forward said he thought basketball was his real calling - especially after the call-up into the Koru side.
"We trialled in August and had a camp together during October.
"I also got called back for the under-18 NZ squad but I bruised my ribs at training and missed out ... I was gutted about that," Martinac said.
Another Boys' High student, Louis Davis, who plays centre, also made the under-17 Koru team and the pair head off to the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup in Albury, New South Wales, on January 12.
There the Kiwis will play teams from NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.
"I'm really looking forward to it. We should have a strong team but we are expecting Australia to be outstanding as usual - they play at such a high level over there," Martinac said.
Martinac brings athleticism and speed to the court, and his solid rebound skills and ability to score hustle points are added advantages to the team, while Davis' 190.5cm stature will be a dominant force on the court.
During the winter, Martinac was called up to play a couple of games for North Force premiers, and while he loves soccer he said he got a real buzz about being on the court.
He also has high hopes for his basketball next year, on the back of an 11-day tour in Australia.
"I really want to try and make the under-18 New Zealand side, as well as the Northland Suns and the under-19 Tai Tokerau side."
It will be a busy year for the determined teenager.
