Daniella Smith has boxed her way to a world title challenge in Germany next month and she's taking her dad along as her coach.
The Kaikohe-raised Smith will fight German Jennifer Retzky for the IBF world welterweight boxing title on November 12.
Her coach, Monty Betham, was unavailable to travel with her so she enrolled her father George to help prepare for the fight.
Smith snr has coached her in basketball and softball, so it won't be a totally new experience for the Cable Bay resident.
Smith said: "My dad is a sportsman. He knows his stuff and knows how to bring out the best in me. It's quite funny he has a very similar style of coaching to Monty and the most important thing to me is having someone in my corner who wants me to win as much as I do," Smith said.
After many years of coaching Kaikohe and Bay of Islands sportspeople to success in local and national competitions, Smith snr is excited about the trip.
"I've always wanted to see people succeed on a bigger stage, seeing goals being set and achieved is huge for me, so taking my daughter to Germany to fight for a world title is a real thrill," he said.
Daniella, 38, never thought she would earn a world title shot and said it was a dream come true.
She is a boxing trainer and part-owner of Boxing Alley in Auckland, and earned the title fight after recently defeating Gabriella Zapata of Argentina.
She said: "Gabriella had fought for two world titles and is hugely respected on a world boxing stage. Beating her has opened doors for me."
Daniella beat the big-hitting Argentinian in Auckland recently. She believes her fitness and desire to win gives her the edge.
"Man could she punch. I've never been hit so hard," Smith said.
"I thought I was going down in the first round, then I heard my dad screaming and I thought, 'Stuff this, I'm not getting knocked out in front of my family'.
" Something kicked in and I got my rhythm."
Interest in Daniella spiked after that. In one week she received phone calls from Norway and Germany offering her world title bouts. She was asked to fight World WBC, WBA and WBO world Champion Cecelia Braekhus on October 30 in Norway and also asked to fight in Germany on November 12.
"After discussing my options with Monty, we decided to take the Germany fight as it would give us more time to prepare," Smith said.
Betham said: "Dandy Smith knows boxing. She just needs someone she can trust and will kick her butt when she needs it and according to her, her father is the man for the job so I trust her decision."
Smith and her father leave for Germany on November 8.
Betham will take charge of her training in Auckland.
Smith's father is being bought up to speed with training details and the fight plan.
"Having dad coach me takes me back to my teenage years living in Kaikohe," Smith said.
"This time, however, we are on a world stage, and the one thing that hasn't changed, we both believe I can win," Daniella said.
Smith, with a record of 9-0-1, turned professional six years ago.
