Northland's latest Northern Districts' recruit Tim Southee has proved himself as a bowler but there's one thing bugging him about his game as he eyes up the upcoming State Shield one-day series and Twenty20 competition.
"My batting hasn't really been too great at any level this season.
"I've been quite good at getting myself out - that's been the case far too often - and I'm in one of those patches, where you can't really buy a run."
Southee admits to lacking patience with the bat and that has translated into a run drought, but he is looking forward to turning his luck around in the upcoming State Shield one-day series.
The Maungakaramea fast bowler has impressed with his bowling in his debut first-class season and celebrated his 19th birthday last week, with his first five-wicket bag against Auckland.
He has cemented himself in the side but feels that if he bats at number-nine for ND in the State Shield competition, as he did against Bangladesh on Sunday, a few scores wouldn't go amiss.
ND coach Andy Moles is using the two games against Bangladesh as a trial for the upcoming one-day series.
"The games are all about giving everybody a chance to show the selectors what they've got before they sit down and pick 12 players for the first one-day match against the Auckland Aces," Moles said.
He was impressed with the way his side beat the tourists on Sunday and is looking forward to today's match as an even bigger challenge.
"The guys played very well, we worked on partnerships, and with the ball and in the field we were very good and it showed what we've been missing in the longer form of the game," he said.
"I think Bangladesh will be stronger today, they'll have blown a few cobwebs out of the system and will be getting used to the conditions, so I expect them to come back stronger."
The expected return of Ian Butler into the side will be a talking point after he has spent so much time on the sidelines with back injuries.
The former Black Caps fast bowler has transformed himself into a batsman, who bowls a limited amount of medium pace. He is a shoe-in for the Knights' Twenty20 squad but is also an option for the State Shield team.
Tauranga schoolboy Kane Williamson gets another chance with the bat in today's match, with Northland's Joe Yovich also in the run-on squad.
Southee will be twelfth man today after his 1/43 return on Sunday and is looking forward to the rest of the summer's competition.
"We've had a bit of a disappointing time in the State Championship series so far and we're looking to put that right in the State Shield," he said.
Southee hopes to play right up to his departure for the ICC Under-19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur in February.
