Cricket: New City recruit cleans up

City's Stacy Hyndman has made it on to the City Cricket Club honours board in emphatic fashion after a remarkable effort during his first-ever match at Cobham Oval.

Helping City to a 152-run win over Kaipara Flats on day two of their Oxford Trust two-day competition round-three match, Hyndman produced a stunning 7-27 in the fourth innings to almost single-handedly snatch the match from Kaipara's grasp.

With overall match figures of 11-49, Hyndman, a medium-pace seamer, defied the odds on a pitch that wasn't particularly seamer-friendly to shut out Kaipara's hopes of a round-three victory; and in doing so became the first bowler to make the City honours board for some time.

Declaring at 130/6 in their second innings, City set Kaipara an imposing task.

City captain Ian Page (44 not out) was the pick of the bunch, while Joey Yovich's 33 runs off 43 balls -- which included seven boundaries -- was also vital.

In good form with the ball playing for Kaipara, left-hand orthodox spinner Luke Beaven came away with 3-29, while Sean Beamish managed 2-61 and Matthew Taylor took 1-31.

Opening Kaipara's rebuttal in the fourth innings, Rory Christopherson got off to a good start scoring 29 runs off 38 balls, and No2 Ray Beamish notched 14 off 33 balls.

However, the innings was completely dominated by City's new import Hyndman.

Keeping busy through his 10 overs with the ball, Hyndman -- formally from the Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club in Auckland -- demolished Kaipara's batting lineup en route to his seven-wicket bag in the final innings of the two-day affair.

Picking up the leftovers, City's Craig Little took 2-18 as the home side toppled their visitors and sent them back to Kaipara with work to do.

At Maungakaramea Domain, a knock of 83 from opener Chamodh Peiris wasn't enough to get the ball rolling for Whangarei Boys' High School's 1st XI as they slumped to a 53-run loss to Maungakaramea on day two of their match.

Struggling to build sufficient partnerships, Boys' High were hung out to dry finishing on 143 after 59 overs in the fourth innings.

Leading the bowling effort for Maungakaramea, 2-4 from Kurtley Watson, 2-9 from M Southee and 2-13 from Michael Harris helped sink the Boys' High batsmen's chances.

Sunday's Reserve Grade 40-over final between City and Maungakaramea was postponed due to inclement weather at Maungakaramea Domain halting play.
