Northern Districts Jono Boult's first class debut couldn't have been a more last minute affair but that didn't stop the 23-year-old taking his chances.
Boult's took four wickets to knock over Auckland's top order and turn the four-day match at Cobham Oval, Northern Districts way yesterday.
The 23-year-old Tauranga batsman and part-time spinner was called into the side on Thursday after Bruce Martin was called into the New Zealand A side.
The long-time Northern Districts A player was thrilled to get his call up and drove up to Whangarei on Friday to join the team.
He was pleased with the way he batted at number-seven to score 31 on Saturday, although it wasn't quite enough to secure first innings points, with Northern Districts falling nine runs short of Auckland's first innings total of 277.
Boult was surprised by his early success on Sunday after Auckland resumed on 27/1.
"I was just happy to get one out there really, I was pretty nervous when they tossed me the ball this morning but I knew I had to treat it like any game of cricket," he said.
After Martin was given some stick by the Auckland batsmen in the first innings, finishing his eight overs with 0/35, Boult's 4/78 off 28 overs read very well by comparison.
"I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. The wicket was flat and there was a bit of spin in it," he said.
Boult just wanted to get another two wickets in the afternoon to go one better than his brother Trent. Boult's younger brother was with the squad this weekend but is unavailable for the game, recovering from a back injury.
"He's got five wickets before, so I wanted to beat him and get bragging rights by getting six," he said.
Boult's four wickets set up Northern Districts for an overall win but after having Auckland at 134/8, a ninth wicket partnership of 106 between Gareth Hopkins (100) and Darryl Tuffey (55) got them back into the game, allowing Auckland to reach 259 before they were dismissed.
Hopkin's century came from 149 balls and included just nine boundaries as the Auckland wicket-keeper saved the day for his team and set up an interesting final day today.
Northern Districts need 268 to take an outright win and at stumps were 113/3, with Hamish Marshall and night watchman Bradley Scott at the wicket.
