Two successful international matches at Whangarei's Cobham Oval have pleased both spectators and administrators.
Kamo teenage cricketers Sarah Penwarden, 15, Brooke Johnson, 13, and Katie Glover, 15, were happily perched on the embankment for yesterday's game.
Sipping cans of softdrink in deck chairs under an umbrella away from the hot sun, the girls thought it was cool to be able to watch international cricket in Whangarei.
But when they turned up on Sunday for the first Rosebowl match, on the suggestion of their cricket coach, they thought they'd be watching men play.
"I didn't realise it was women's cricket until we turned up," Katie said.
"But it's okay. It's kinda cool."
All girls enjoyed the talent on display and said they were looking to pick up tips.
Their teammate, 14-year-old Jess Turner, was New Zealand Cricket's 12th (Wo)Man for a Day, which let her watch the White Ferns' warm-up, run out the match ball, lunch and sit with the team and run out drinks onto the field.
"It's pretty cool that we've got this game here," Jess said.
"It proves that it's not just a boys sport ... It's a real good ground, too."
