The future of schoolgirl cricket in Whangarei is strong if the talent in this week's Leef Cup final is anything to go by, says Northland selector Heather Deane.
Three games on Tuesday went down to the wire and were of a good standard, Deane said.
Whangarei Girls' High School put on a top bowling and fielding performance to scrape in to win the division-one final.
Kamo were 70 all out in response to Girls' High's 76.
The playoff for third and fourth came down to the last ball. Tauraroa Area School batted their way to victory over Kerikeri High School, scoring 109-5 against Kerikeri's 108-4.
And Dargaville High School weren't able to defend their first-innings total, losing narrowly to Mahurangi College in the division-two final.
Deane said a solid group of youngsters, aged 13 and 14, was coming through. Interest in girls' cricket was growing, with several schools organising their own interschool competitions in the next few weeks.
