Promising Kamo High School batsman Curtis Cherrington was recognised by his peers at the annual Northland cricket awards at the Spire Pavilion on May 10.
Cherrington won the award for the best under-17 boys batsman and also was named as player of the tournament for the Northern Districts U17 tournament in Gisborne.
Cherrington was one of the only batsmen at the rain-affected tournament to shine in the conditions and was selected in the Northern Districts squad as a result of his scoring ability.
At the national under-17 tournament in Napier, Cherrington was spotted by national high performance manager John Wright and selected in the New Zealand under-17 training squad.
The young batsman recently attended a national training camp in Napier and will continue to push his case for selection into the next under-19 ICC World Cup squad for 2010.
Northland's most recent cricket international Tim Southee, who was the player of the tournament at this year's Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, was named Northland's cricketer of the year at the awards ceremony.
While the top award never seemed in doubt for the Maungakaramea pace bowler, there was plenty of competition for the age group cricketers, who received awards after excelling in their representative teams during competition over the 2007-8 season.
The age group awards are as follows:
