Western Sharks saw their chances of slowing Hora Hora's winning streak slip away at Dargaville, when they lost to the visitors 12-20.
The ball also slid from the Sharks' grasp all too often during the Southern Districts Premier match up with the table leaders.
The Sharks' play was error-ridden from kick-off. The backline dropped the ball at crucial times throughout the 80 minutes when it looked as though they may score from a break, while the forwards turned the ball over in the rucks and mauls.
Hora Hora made the most of the Sharks' lost opportunities, frustrating the Sharks' forwards coach Darrel Bradley.
"We made far too many mistakes and Hora Hora are the type of team who live for their opposition to make them." Hora Hora opened the scoring shortly after kick off when the Sharks gave away their first penalty 10m out from their own tryline. Hora Hora chose to scrum and were rewarded with flanker Robert Murray putting the visitors on the board to take an early 0-5 lead after first five eighth Jack McPhee missed the conversion.
The Sharks looked dangerous whenever their backs saw gaps in the generally tight Hora Hora defensive line. On several occasions early in the first half, the Sharks looked like they would equalise, had it not been for sloppy passes, and knock-ons.
The game ebbed and flowed with both teams playing with speed and intensity throughout the first half but both unable to capitalise on their possession. However, Hora Hora's McPhee converted a penalty just before the break to extend their lead to 0-8.
Right on halftime, Sharks' halfback Sonetane Takalua managed a successful break and offload to winger Ulosi Kalea who dotted the ball down, putting the Sharks back in the match, but they still trailed 5-8, after Takalua missed the conversion.
Hora Hora came back at their hosts immediately after the break, sending centre Warren Dunn across the line in the corner for a try, converted by McPhee. Six minutes later, winger John Graham flew down the flank to cross the line in the same corner , and McPhee converted, blowing the score out to 5-22.
The Sharks threw all they had at their visitors as they fought back. They took advantage of Hora Hora's tiring defence, with a big scrum just out from their tryline which rolled over, with No 8 Latu Moala at the bottom of it holding the ball. Takalua's conversion was successful, but their fightback came too late, and the Sharks missed out on a bonus point.
Hora Hora's Mark Seymour, who took over coaching duties following Bruce Hodder's recent departure to Auckland, said the clash was what his side had prepared for.
"It's what we expected from the Sharks - a battle. They carry the ball hard, and are hard hitting but we fronted up here today," Seymour said.
Overall, the coach was happy with his side's performance, although he said tackling in the first half was not at the standard he wanted. "It's an attitude thing ... we went through a couple of flat patches but we got through."
In other round six premier games, Old Boys had their first win of the season, beating Marist 24-12, while Otamatea battled hard to stay in their game against Hikurangi. Hikurangi were too good in the end, winning 52-27.
Mid Northern had a close match with Kamo, winning 34-30, while Mid Western defeated Wellsford comfortably, 46-11. Southern Districts Reserves: Western Sharks 17 Hora Hora 10; Old Boys 32 Marist 5; Hikurangi 12 Otamatea 5; Mid Northern 26 Kamo 12; Mid Western 44 Wellwsford 36.
