Play washed out but top qualifiers win two-day title
City Cricket Club were grinning at their prizegiving on Sunday even though the premier grade two-day final was washed out because of rain.
The club picked up the two-day title anyway - as City were the top qualifiers after round robin play - and their opponents Maungakaramea would have to have beaten them outright to have won the title.
The club also picked up the Dargaville Shield - awarded for overall champion of the premier grade.
"We've had a good season overall as we've showed in this two-day club competition - but also in the other competitions - where we've been there or thereabouts," captain Rory Darkins said.
Darkins said the season wasn't perfect but with a young side they would continue to build for the future.
Kaipara Flats had the upper hand over City in the first two competitions of the year - beating them in the finals of the Twenty20 and OneDay competitions before City started turning the results around to be clearly the form team of the two-day competition.
"The success the club is having on and off the field is a reflection of the work that many of the club's supporters behind the scenes and the continued support of sponsors," he said.
He said the support for the team had been a big help to him in his first season as captain.
"Our manager Don Nelson was fantastic all year and didn't miss a game, he ran drinks to us and as a measure of his commitment - even missed the club photo - because he was taking a picture for Richard Atkins," he said.
