A near-death experience in the surf at a west coast beach was a valuable lesson, a Northland sports champion says.
World street unicycling champion Christian Huriwai of Otaua, near Kaikohe, said almost drowning on New Year's Eve was a "good experience" because it taught him a few life lessons.
The 19-year-old hoped others would learn from his mistakes and "be a bit more careful" in the water.
"You always think it's not going to happen to you - but it can."
His main message was that swimmers should respect the power of the ocean and avoid going out of their depth.
