Thirteen teenagers from different parts of the North Island recently spent four days cycling the hills of Hokianga.
Marsden Wheelers junior coach Ruth Jarman said the Opononi-based camp was a new idea for the Whangarei road cycling club.
"All the riders enjoyed the camp so much the club is planning to make it an annual event - young riders are the future of cycling," she said.
The camp attracted riders from New Plymouth and Auckland as well as some from several parts of Northland, ranging in age from 11 to 17.
Every day, they received instruction on cycling techniques with a focus on hill climbing, which were followed by 40km-60km rides.
The final ride for those in the camp was the 340m climb up into the Waipoua Forest to see Tane Mahuta.
"Our aim was to have fun as well as teaching the kids how to be faster on their bikes and Hokianga is an ideal place for cycling with mild winter weather, quiet roads, friendly people and interesting things to do - including sand boarding on the other side of the harbour, which was a hit," Jarman said.
Camp to be held annually
