Round two of the Northland Scholastics Surfing Series saw the Williams brothers fighting for the top position, with Dayne (Whangarei Boys High) taking the second events title off brother, Regan (Kamo High School).
The event got off to a slow start in small, onshore one to two-foot waves at Sandy Bay.
Sunday's challenging onshore conditions provided the 25 contestants with the opportunity to prove their skills.
In the boys under-14 division Matt McGregor, also from Kamo High, showed his skills by picking off the best waves and surfing them with style, taking out the division. Kerikeri High School's Joe Palmer showed promise but came short against McGregor's determination and wave selection.
The boys under-16 division proved another difficult division to progress through. Mimiwhangata's Paul Moretti went head-to-head with Kamo's Patxi Scott-Arietta and both boys demonstrated strong surfing but Scott-Arietta's local knowledge was not enough to claim victory over Moretti.
Meanwhile, in the boys under-18 division, a straight final and an increase in swell allowed the contestants more waves to fight it out. Taking out the division was Joe Moretti with strong manoeuvres in the most critical part of the waves. Showing his stuff was local boy Darcy Bowden coming in behind in second.
The third and final event in the 2010 Northland Scholastics Surfing Series is at Mangawhai Heads on June 20.
