Onerahi Central's Nic Breslin had an outstanding innings for his side, knocking huge 134 runs in a thrilling match against Kamo in the Lion Red One Day Premier Grade Cricket Competition.
After being sent in to bat on Saturday at Kensington Park, Kamo made 240 runs all out with two overs remaining.
Onerahi Central had a dire start with Thomas Keogh out for a duck and Craig Russell falling for just nine runs. Breslin came to the crease and steadied the ship, reading the ball well before Ritchie MacPherson finally bowled the batsman and added to his four-wicket haul. Terry McErlane and Sean O'Shea contributed a helpful 24 and 14 respectively but the Kamo bowlers made light work of the lower-order batsmen. With one wicket to spare, Onerahi Central managed to snatch a narrow victory, reaching 241-9.
Last season's 50-over champions came second to a full-strength Kaipara outfit in their round three one-dayer at Kensington Park. After winning the toss Whangarei Boys High School sent Kaipara into bat first as the wicket was still a bit green and juicy for their liking, WBHS manager Russell Smith said.
After a few loose opening overs, WBHS' Ben Hyde and Ben Williams tightened up their bowling and restricted opening batsmen Tauseef Satti and Brad Wilson to 22 and 31 runs respectively. Aiden Miller picked up the handy wicket of Northern Districts' James Marshall, dismissing him for eight runs.
Miller was the best of the schoolboys' bowlers, taking a hat-trick for 43 runs in nine overs.
Brett Hood salvaged the innings for Kaipara with his 59 runs, while skipper Jacob Phillips was the only other batsman to make double figures, ending the innings on 35 not out.
Kaipara set a target of 194-7 for the schoolboys, who struggled to find their stride during the chase. Efficient bowling and fielding by Kaipara saw opening batsmen Bradley Kneebone out for seven runs and Ben Williams was run out for 22 runs by Marshall, while Henry Cooper could not repeat last week's ton scoring effort against the quality Kaipara side, and was dismissed by Kevin Forde for 18.
The middle order failed to produce any double figures, and the schoolboys looked to be in a spot of bother after losing three wickets without moving off 62 runs.
At 69-9, Year 10 students Fraser Seymour and David Armit proved reliable when they put together a last tier partnership of 55 to give some respectability back to the schoolboys, who were all out for 124 in 35.2 overs, short of Kaipara's total by 70 runs.
Satti impressed with the ball for his side, claiming another hat-trick, taking 3-28.
City and Maungakaramea went head to head at Cobham Oval with City coming up trumps.
The wicket was being used for the first time this season and it gave the bowlers plenty of seam.
City restricted Maungakaramea to 125 runs, with all their wickets falling in 38 overs.
Joseph Yovich marked his return to club cricket bagging four wickets for 14 runs, while Rory Darkins was also impressive taking 3-41.
Although Maungakaramea was boosted with the return of Black Cap Tim Southee, City's batsmen comfortably reached 128, losing only three wickets - two to Ewen Thompson and the other to Southee - in 31 overs.
Richard Atkins 33 not out and Chris Page's 41 not out were best with the bat for City.
