DARGAVILLE High School's Jessie Moffett dispatches a bowl during last week's Northland Secondary School Trial Tournament at the Whangarei Bowling Club, while Kamo High School's Carley Hammond plans her next roll.
More than 60 students from seven high schools in the region attended the event - and the numbers forced organisers to expand the event from the bowling club to use one of the neighbouring RSA club's greens to accommodate them all.
Bowls Northland spokesman Steve Smith said the turnout was hugely encouraging.
"It's by far the biggest turnout we've ever had for a tournament like this in Northland and it's similar to the response we've had at high schools in the North Harbour area where literally hundreds of kids have become involved in bowling at school."
Selectors had their work cut out for them to pick a Northland team to play a North Harbour team at Wellsford in April, with the selection still to be finalised.
