Bowls: Superb end to great season

The weather finally played ball and the last two Centre events for the season were completed at the Hikurangi greens on Saturday and Sunday.

The 1-10 Year Any Combination triples with 16 entries was won by a composite combination of Darren Mitchell, Jude Ganley (Kensington) and Rob Anderson (Mangawhai) with four wins, 30 ends and 56 points. Close behind in second place with four wins, 30 ends and 55 points were the Mangawhai combination of Neville Franks, Wayne Williams and Keith Mitchell.

Wightman again

The Women's Champion of Champion singles were completed on Sunday. When play started there were four players left, Ann Halls (Onerahi), Linda Pedro (Hikurangi), Fisha Murray (Kensington) and Sue Wightman (Mangawhai). In the semi finals Pedro started of well against Halls who then fought back to be 1 shot behind before Pedro scored seven shots in four ends and had a comfortable win over Halls 21-13. Wightman had a very tight match against Murray who came back from a 12-3 deficit on the eighth end and a 18-11 deficit on the 17th end to 18-all before Wightman took out the last two ends to win the match 21-18.

In the final Wightman once again got out to a big lead being 16-5 up after 11 ends. Pedro scored 12 shots to Wightman's three on the next nine ends to be only two shots in arrears. On the 23rd end, Pedro moved the jack to be holding three shots to win the match. Wightman drew the shot with her last bowl to win the match 21-18.

This was a seventh singles title for Wightmanwho now holds 11 centre titles.

Awards dinner

This Saturday sees the culmination of the summer season with the Northland Centre Awards presentations, dinner and presentation of prizes to be held at the Kamo Club. Tickets are still available from Gwen or Diane at $26 per person. The evening starts at 5.30pm with dinner at 6.15pm.

Reminder

Clubs are reminded that they should have their open tournament programme and any requests for changes into the Centre Match Committee by the end of the month for approval.
