Onerahi Primary School won the 19th Whangarei BMX Club's annual schools challenge at the Riverside Dr track on Sunday. The event drew a record 170 riders from 12 schools with Whangarei Heads Primary School taking second and Maungatapere School third. Riders competed in four events individually and the best five riders scores from each school were totalled to find the winners. The Whangarei BMX Club is the biggest club in the country, with 127 members, and has been awarded the National BMX Championships in 2009. It was to hold a follow-up competition tonight known as the Pre-loved Trophy Competition and any riders who competed at the weekend are encouraged to join in. The trophies are recycled from previous events and rebranded for new events, with registration opening from 5.30pm. The top five riders from each school at Sunday's competition are: Onerahi Primary: Jacob Romer, Karl Ball, Blake Vinson, Liam Caldwell, Scott Patterden. Whangarei Heads School: Courtney Rees, Bayleigh Rees, Llyod Patrick, Bodhi Van der Ent, Taff Johnstone. Maungatapere School: Joshua Marker, Harry Marker, David Marker, Nathan Gavin, Ben Ashman. Whau Valley School: Litleigh Moon, Sharrell Toka, Julian Campbell, Harley Taylor, Shayden Toka. St Francis Xavier: Connor Otene, Skye Newman, Dhruv Chavan, Keedan Bruce, Bronson Fred. Whangarei Boys High: Piripi Jones, Josh Ngaropo, Josh Wedge, AJ Thorburn, Robert Campbell. Kamo Primary: Cody Wharfe, Dylan Knight, Kieran Knight, Liam Atkins, Reuben Nicholl. Whangarei Primary: Phillip Johnson, Ben Wright, Anthony Carter-Bell, Jordan Harwood, Luke Griffin. Maunu School: Zak Springford, Clay Langford, Scott Still, Shania King, Matt Langford. Parua Bay Primary: Troy D'anvers, Luke McGiven, Joseph Parr, Jemma McGiven, Jacob Cosson. Hurapaki Primary: Matthew Haynes, Nathan Hooker, Flynn Hill, Brian Toxward, Lachlan Pyle. Ruawai College: Peter Blackwell, Sean Hobson, Kyle Hobson-Bonner, Steph Baker, Sherena Bowers. Bream Bay: Guy, Trent and Michael Elmes. FACT BOXBMX racing isn't the cheapest sport to get into but neither is it the most expensive _ here's a look at what it might cost you to get started. Bike _ $100 (second hand); $2000 (top of the range, new) Full Face Helmet _ $150 (basic, new); $300 (pretty flash) Gloves _ $30 Basic Safety Gear (not compulsory) _ from $80 to $250 (full body armor) Club Fees (based on Whangarei BMX Club's 2007 fees) _ Sprockets $45 (under-8), Open Class $80 (includes national competition licence), $50 Novice (doesn't include licence)
