The Blues' coaches have issued a reminder to their players that no-one is exempt from being dropped from the squad by leaving out All Black winger Joe Rokocoko for tomorrow's game against the Hurricanes.
Blues assistant coach Bryce Woodward said the decision to drop Rokocoko from the side entirely wasn't taken lightly.
"If you're not able to perform at a eight or nine out of 10 - then you are vulnerable at selection time and that's what happened to Joe this week and we've told him to go back to club footy this weekend and try and work his way back," he said.
"The brutal harsh reality of professional sport is that he's got to play better or he's going to watch more games."
Woodward and Pat Lam have re-shuffled the backline to include Stephen Brett and Luke McAllister at first and second five-eighth, with Benson Stanley moving out to the wing, with Rene Ranger changing from left to right wing.
Stanley has played on the wing before under Lam's coaching but his presence in midfield may be missed with the return of Ma'a Nonu to the Hurricanes.
"I'm sure with Ma'a back they'll look to attack us through the midfield, they'll target Stephen and Luke then look to bring their wingers into play so we've got to make sure we defend that first," he said.
He said the defensive system worked well against the Western Force last week, but there were still too many individuals missing tackles to be satisfied.
Other changes include starts for prop John Afoa, lock Kurtis Haiu, flanker Luke Braid and No8 Peter Saili, who is back after a week's stand down for a head injury.
Chris Smylie returns to the bench with Alby Mathewson starting at halfback, while Northland's Lachie Munro moves on to the bench for the second time this year as wing-fullback cover.
