Bronson Murray's future with the Taniwha is still unknown, despite Northland coach Adriaan Ferris expecting to hear from him over the weekend.
Kaitaia-born Murray, has represented the Taniwha since he was 18 and has amassed 96 caps for Northland but is the only Northland Super-15 player not to commit to the the franchise this season.
He has been linked to other provinces but told the Advocate last week he wanted to return to play another season for Northland and to reach his 100th game milestone.
The terms of his 2011 contract are understood to be the point of contention, with the cash-strapped Northland Union once again severely restricted in their player payment budget.
"It's all part of the game but it is hanging over our heads a little bit," Ferris admitted.
"We do want to know what he's going to do because it does affect the team, because we'll have to find a replacement for him if he doesn't sign."
The union has recently finalised terms with Joel McKenty and Justin Davies, and there are six contracts still to be signed to complete the 2011 squad.
But another 2010 squad member has turned down the union's contract he was offered.
Mid Western skipper Adam Clarke was expected to be the back-up halfback to Rhyan Caine, after waiting in the wings last season and filling in as the back-up second five-eighth, but he has turned down the Northland contract offer.
"I'll be Northland's biggest supporter this year but I won't be available for them," Clarke said.
"The contract wasn't what I wanted and I would have liked to been offered it earlier and in the end I decided that I'd be better off playing club rugby and concentrating on a couple of things that I really want to do," he said.
Clarke said it was time for him to think of his future and get "stuck into some things that have been in the pipeline for too long".
There were no hard feelings with the Northland union, he said, and he would consider playing for Northland again in 2012, if he was still enjoying playing club rugby and felt he was up to it.
Murray is represented by Warren Alcock - the same agent who represents Dan Carter - but neither he nor Murray could be contacted for comment yesterday.
