Cameron Leslie not only won gold in the Beijing Paralympics individual medley swimming final, he set a new world record and knocked six seconds of his personal best time. The achievement also won Leslie the inaugural Attitude Award, which honours the outstanding achievements of New Zealanders living with disabilities.
However, he was unsuccessful at the Northland Sports Awards in November, and wasn't afraid to say so.
"It seems that someone can achieve gold at the highest level that someone with a disability can achieve and yet that's still not good enough for a major award," Leslie said.
Sour grapes? No, Leslie had a point and he made it publicly in a measured, articulate manner.
