Work has started on Whangārei's $26 million Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery.
Heavy machinery moved on to the site at the Town Basin yesterday to start the careful job of dismantling the old Northland Harbour Board building to make way for the centre.
Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser first proposed a project to convert the old harbour board and Northland Regional Council building at the Town Basin into one of his renowned living buildings.

Whangarei firm Trigg Construction to build Hundertwasser Arts Centre
Northland firm Trigg Construction will build the centre, which is expected to take about 27 months.
