Whangarei police are currently searching for two men after the armed robbery of a security van in centre of the city today.

Police said a security van guard was confronted with a man with a gun outside a Bank Street building at about 2.30pm today.

The man managed to get a sum of money and then left the scene in a car driven by another offender.

The vehicle was located by police an hour later on Raumanga Heights Drive.

The two men are still at large.

The vehicle is described as a black 1999 Subaru Forrester and is believed to have been stolen.
