Northland is likely to escape the worst of the storm front that has brought high winds and devastation to parts of the country further south.
However, yesterday's wild weather brought down a power line and cut power to Kaeo. The incident occurred in Martin Rd, east of Kaeo, at 10.25am. The Kaeo Fire Brigade was called out but not required.
MetService meteorologist John Law said a strong southerly front has been sweeping up the country, bringing exceptionally strong winds to parts of the country, particularly around Canterbury.
But, Mr Law said, Northland should largely escape the worst of the storm front as it weakened heading north. The worst of what was left of the storm, thunder, strong winds and rainfall, should have hit Northland last night, with the risk of some minor surface flooding, but no major problems were expected.
However, there was a slight risk of thunderstorms last night and localised downpours of 25mm-35mm.
