It really makes you wonder sometimes how much we "actually" know about the pelagic fishery, when marlin are being consistently seen in 17.4C water and the blue has long retreated.
And kayakers are still catching skippies as a regular occurrence in inshore waters. Perhaps someone forgot to tell these fish that winter has been here for a while and they shouldn't be where they are, but for some bizarre reason last week there were plenty seen in as close as 270m.
Winter is such a horrid time of year isn't it on the fishing front?
We can get out wide for hapuka and bluenose. We can fish in shore for those elusive trophy snapper and catch a pretty decent feed while we're at it. We can target large kingfish with all manner of method and we can do so without the crowding and noise of the summer season. In short, Northland is such a wonderful place to live.
The fishing has been pretty decent out there, folks, with many people getting out and wetting a line over the past two weekends.
