While New Zealand athletes compete for medals in Glasgow, Whangarei toddlers were battling it out in their own version of the Commonwealth Games.
Nearly 200 children aged two-to-five converged at the ASB Stadium in Kensington yesterday for the third annual Educare Games, which includes activities and challenges such as a ball and spoon race, obstacle courses, and moonhopper races.
The children came from the eight Educare centres around the Whangarei district, each of which represented different countries who had a connection with their centre, such as Norfolk Island for the Norfolk St centre, and Scotland for the Bream Bay centre.
Educare general manager Marianne Walker said the event was a fun day for all the children.
"They love it and they've had a real build-up this year with the Commonwealth Games on," she said.
