Hatea Loop users will soon enjoy a little more of Whangarei's waterfront.
Work is under way to divert the loop along the waterside perimeter behind the mostly marine businesses at 44 to 48 Riverside Drive, rather than the roadside footpath.
Landowner Golden Kiwi Holdings Limited commissioned the work as part of the deal it struck with Whangarei District Council when it bought the land in June 2013, in the hopes it could attract a developer to build a hotel.
The company paid $1.9 million for the 12,000 square-metre site plus a $600,000 bond, which the council will release once the work is done - expected to be mid-February.
The 4.2km Hatea Loop has been a popular addition to the Town Basin area since it opened almost 18 months ago.
