A swarm of wasps reportedly surrounded two houses in Kaitaia yesterday and a local man blamed a minor crash on wasps entering his car.
His claim was treated with scepticism until the swarm in Church St was reported.

However, no complaints about wasps were made to the Far North District Council yesterday. A spokesman said if a wasp swarm was on private land the landowner would be offered pest extermination advice; if it was on public land council officers would investigate and if necessary have the wasps removed.
Bee swarms were treated differently with the nearest apiary invited to collect the bees so they could be put to productive use. A complaint about wasps had been lodged on Wednesday but there had been no more swarms than usual in the Far North, the spokesman said.
